Description

The Yellow Sally is a well-known dry fly pattern that imitates the small yellow stoneflies (Isoperla species) found in many rivers and streams across North America. These insects hatch in abundance during the warm summer months, often from late June through August, providing steady surface action when trout eagerly rise to feed on them.

With its slender yellow body, delicate hackle, and upright wing, the Yellow Sally provides a lifelike silhouette that drifts naturally on the water’s surface. Its size and coloration make it an excellent match for the smaller stoneflies that trout key in on during mid-summer hatches. The buoyant materials ensure it rides high, making it visible and effective even in faster riffles and pocket water.

This fly excels in freestone rivers and mountain streams where Yellow Sallies are common, but it is also a productive searching pattern in waters without strong stonefly populations. Fished on a dead drift or skated lightly across the surface, the Yellow Sally triggers aggressive strikes from trout looking for an easy summer meal.
