The Sprout Adams pattern is a delicate emerger fly fishing fly designed to imitate mayflies caught in the surface film as they struggle to hatch. With its low-floating profile and realistic design, this fly fools even the most selective trout during heavy hatches. By presenting an insect in transition—neither fully nymph nor dun—the Sprouts triggers strikes when trout are keyed in on vulnerable stages of mayflies.

The Sprouts fly features a slender body, spent or emerging wings, and a subtle hackle that holds it in the surface film. Its sparse build ensures a natural drift, while its translucent materials mimic fragile wings trapped by the meniscus. Available in hatch-matching colors like olive, cream, and gray, it can imitate Blue Wing Olives, Pale Morning Duns, or other mayflies, depending on local conditions.
When and Where to Use
The Sprout Adams pattern is especially effective on spring creeks, tailwaters, and flat glides where trout inspect every detail. It excels during dense hatches when fish refuse high-floating duns but eagerly sip emergers. Fished on fine tippet with a drag-free drift, the Sprouts are deadly fishing flies that consistently bring up selective trout.
