Description
Pheasant Tail Flashback T.H. Hot Collar – Tungsten Mayfly Nymph with Trigger Color
The Pheasant Tail Flashback T.H. Hot Collar is a dynamic variation of the classic Pheasant Tail Nymph, designed to combine the natural effectiveness of traditional materials with the visibility and attraction of modern Euro-nymphing patterns. The addition of a tungsten bead provides a rapid sink rate, while the bright hot collar serves as a visual trigger that provokes reaction strikes from trout in all water conditions.
Design / Features
These fly fishing flies are tied using natural pheasant tail fibers for the segmented body, a flashback wing case for subtle shimmer, and fine copper ribbing for strength and definition. The hot collar—usually a bright orange or chartreuse band—adds contrast that helps the fly stand out in fast or slightly stained water. The tungsten bead drives it deep quickly, allowing for precise drifts in deep pools and fast seams.
When and Where to Use
The Pheasant Tail Flashback T.H. Hot Collar performs best in tailwaters, freestone rivers, and mountain streams where mayfly nymphs are abundant. It’s effective year-round, particularly during Baetis and PMD hatches. Fish it Euro-style, under an indicator, or as an anchor in a tandem nymph rig for consistent hook-ups in both clear and turbulent conditions.

Worked very well for brooks, rainbows and browns at Ten Lakes in Yosemite, and East Lake and Green Creek in the Eastern Sierras.
