Description
The Hornberg is a timeless and highly versatile fly that can be fished both as a dry fly and a streamer-style wet fly. Initially developed in Wisconsin in the 1920s by Frank Hornberg, this fly imitates a wide range of trout prey, including caddis and stoneflies, as well as small baitfish or sculpin, depending on its presentation.
Tied with a natural-toned body, barred mallard wings, and peacock herl accents, the Hornberg has a flashy, lifelike profile that triggers instinctive strikes from trout, bass, and even panfish. When fished dry, it floats high and dances across the surface, mimicking fluttering insects. When pulled under and swung, it takes on the appearance of a struggling minnow or drowned caddis.
Ideal for rivers, spring creeks, and stillwaters, the Hornberg is a deadly choice in both fast and slow water. It’s a classic “attractor” fly—often chosen when nothing else seems to work. This classic pattern earns its place in any well-stocked fly box, offering reliable performance whether fished on the surface or beneath it.
