GRIFFITH’S GNAT

Description

The Griffith’s Gnat is one of the most famous midge patterns ever tied, created by George Griffith, a founder of Trout Unlimited. This simple but highly effective dry fly imitates clusters of midges that form on the water’s surface, a common sight on rivers, spring creeks, and tailwaters throughout the year. Its combination of peacock herl body and grizzly hackle creates a natural, buggy profile that trout can’t resist.

The iridescent peacock herl adds lifelike shimmer, while the palmered hackle keeps the fly afloat and provides movement. Unlike single midge imitations, the Griffith’s Gnat represents multiple insects at once, making it particularly deadly when trout are sipping on midge clusters in slow pools or calm eddies. Its visibility and buoyancy also make it a great searching fly when midges are present but not hatching in large numbers.

The Griffith’s Gnat works year-round, but it shines in winter and early spring when midges are often the primary insect available.
