SULPHUR DUN
$1.89
Sulphur Dun features a slim yellow-orange body, upright wings, and hackle for buoyancy. A must-have dry fly for trout feeding during sulphur mayfly hatches.
Description
Sulphur Dun are time-tested dry fly fishing flies designed to imitate the Sulphur mayflies (Ephemerella invaria and dorothea), which hatch prolifically on many rivers during late spring and early summer evenings. These hatches often bring trout to the surface in steady feeding rhythms, and having a precise imitation, such as the Sulphur Dun, is key to success.
This pattern features a slender yellow-to-orange body, upright wings, and a finely wrapped hackle, creating the perfect profile of a freshly hatched dun riding the current. Its pale coloration is highly visible to trout in low light but still subtle enough to avoid spooking selective fish. The fly floats naturally in riffles, glides, and pool tails, matching the behavior of mayflies as they emerge and drift.
The Sulphur Dun excels during evening hatches on Eastern and Midwestern rivers, but it’s also productive anywhere sulphur-colored mayflies appear. Fished on fine tippet with a drag-free drift, it draws consistent rises from trout feeding selectively on mayfly duns. A classic hatch-matching pattern, the Sulphur Dun remains a cornerstone in any serious angler’s dry fly box.
