We floated the Eagle River from Eagle to Gypsum today and found classic spring conditions. The river was running off-color from increased flows, but water temperatures remained cold, k
eeping fish active throughout the day.
The most productive approach was fishing streamers tight to the banks and structure. Short, quick strips proved key to triggering aggressive strikes from trout holding along softer edges out of the main current.
Top-producing flies included Rusty Trombones in a variety of colors and Bugger Motor Oils. Both patterns moved fish consistently throughout the float, especially when presented close to the bank with an active retrieve.
As runoff continues, anglers should focus on slower water along the edges, seams, and protected holding areas. Streamer fishing remains the most effective tactic, and those willing to cover water and keep their flies tight to the bank should continue to find success.
